Character
Virtue, integrity, responsibility, discipline, honesty, and the testing of self.
“Is character revealed by crisis, or formed by the choices we make before it arrives?”

A global high-school essay competition
What makes a person worthy of trust?
What do we owe our communities?
The invitation
The Dosan Prizes invite high school students worldwide to wrestle with questions that have shaped individuals, societies, and civilizations.
Named for Dosan Ahn Chang Ho (안창호), the competition draws from his conviction that national renewal begins with the development of people. We are not looking for students to repeat the “right” answers. We seek deep thinking, rigorous argumentation, serious engagement with ideas, and independent conclusions.
Three avenues of inquiry
Choose a theme, then meet a question with patience, evidence, and an argument of your own.
Virtue, integrity, responsibility, discipline, honesty, and the testing of self.
“Is character revealed by crisis, or formed by the choices we make before it arrives?”
Citizenship, public service, institutions, democracy, and our collective obligations.
“What does a citizen owe to an imperfect democracy?”
Conscience, dissent, sacrifice, justice, and standing against the crowd.
“When, if ever, does conscience require us to disobey?”

Why Dosan
Dosan Ahn Chang Ho believed trustworthy institutions begin with trustworthy people. His life joined independence, education, democratic organization, and daily self-cultivation—not as separate projects, but as one civic calling.
